Japanese Encephalitis

Encephalitis is a viral infection spread by mosquitos that can cause swelling of the brain, resulting in permanent brain damage or death. According to the World Health Organisation, at least 50,000 people in Asia develop visible symptoms of Japanese Encephalitis each year.

High-Risk Areas

Japanese Encephalitis occurs in most countries in Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and remote parts of northeast Australia. Risk is highest for travellers who are visiting agricultural areas or those who are travelling to high-risk countries for more than three to four weeks.

For temperate countries of Asia including Cambodia, India, and Thailand, the risk is usually highest around the rainy season. In tropical countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, the risk of the disease is year-round.

  • High fever
  • Neck stiffness
  • Disorientation / confusion
  • Coma
  • Tremors
  • Occasional convulsions (especially in infants)
  • Paralysis

Prevention/Vaccine

There is one vaccine for Japanese Encephalitis (Ixiaro) currently licensed in the UK for use in adults and children over two months old. The vaccination is given as an injection and requires two doses for full protection, with the second dose given 28 days after the first. The second dose should ideally be completed at least a week before travelling.
